Volkswagen in Winter, 5 Useful tips for your EV in Winter

RANGE

Cold weather affects your EV’s battery capacity, and can impact range between 10-30%. If you’re planning a long journey - plan your route with ZapMap. A little organisation before travelling is important to alleviate range anxiety, this helps you to identify whether areas your travelling to will have local charging points available for use. You can also pre-book some charging stations.

PRE-CONDITIONING

You can prepare the heating and ventilation via your app remotely before you travel. Pre-setting your car 10 minutes before departure enables the vehicle to warm up immediately, this preserves power in the battery from excessive use of heating and ventilation systems while driving. On icy mornings, it also defrosts the windscreen

CHECK YOUR TYRES

Tyres are an essential part of a vehicles performance, whether it be a petrol, diesel or electric car. When the temperature drops, the air in your tyres contract. Always remember to check the tyre pressures are at the correct level for your EV. If you live somewhere that experiences a lot of cold weather, investing in winter tyres will maximise your vehicle’s range.

SLOW DOWN - REGEN

Quite simply, the faster you drive the shorter the range! Optimising the use of the regenerative braking function will help you to conserve your range (especially in a city). Pre-condition your car before you leave, and use B-Mode while driving your Volkswagen around. Many EV’s also include alternative driving modes such as sport, and eco mode for when you want to enhance your charge.

CHARGING

Use slow charging whenever practical. This is better for the battery life. Rapid chargers do not charge the vehicle as fast in cold weather conditions, since the passage of electrons are slower in lower temperatures. Only use this if you must. Also, try to keep your battery charged betwen 20%-80%, only charge to 100% if required for a longer journey
