Once you’re out of town and onto open country roads or dual carriageways the Golf is right at home. With the eTSI hybrid setup providing ample performance to keep up on faster roads without feeling like it’s straining. The engine itself isn’t intrusive in these situations, never sounding loud or struggling to keep up. It delivers it’s power smoothly and with little noise or vibration, making for a serene cabin experience on longer drives. It’s on these longer drives where the Adaptive Cruise Control really comes into its own, keeping the car following the vehicle in front at a consistent speed and distance. It’s activated by a touch of a button on the steering wheel where easy adjustments to the speed and follow distance can also be made with quick button taps. If a more manual experience is desired the adaptive aspects can be turned off in favour of a more traditional cruise control, with a simple speed limiter to govern things.
In terms of practicality, the Golf excels, inside there’s room for 4 adults in comfort with a fifth at a squeeze on shorter journeys. As for the boot, it’s a generous size almost as deep and tall as it is wide. It’ll take big weekly shops, Multiple gym bags or even suitcases with ease, with a false floor to help section things out if needed. With the seats down this space expands further making it suitable for those larger jobs that occasionally pop-up such as furniture shopping or moving home.
